On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, the SS Arthur M. Anderson made its way out of Duluth Harbor, cutting a striking figure against the cold, gray waters of Lake Superior. Fully laden with iron ore, the legendary freighter embarked on another journey, continuing its long-standing service as one of the Great Lakes' most enduring and respected vessels.
The Anderson has sailed the Great Lakes for more than 70 years now, first launched on Feb. 16, 1952. It was trailing behind the Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975, as a nasty storm blew across Lake Superior.
The Arthur M. Anderson was one of the vessels that participated in the U.S. government's demonstration program in the experimental extension of the navigation season to a full 12 months during the winters of 197475 and 197576. The sea trials of the Arthur M. Anderson began on August 7, 1952, and she loaded her first cargo at the Two Harbours dock on August 12, 1952. Throughout her career, she underwent several refits, including the addition of a new 120-foot 37 m midsection in 1975, which added approximately 6,000 tons to her gross tonnage, bringing the total to approximately 26,000 tons.
