The Lions finally debuted a statue in 2023. Fittingly, it was of Barry Sanders, the greatest player in franchise history and its most popular. And fans have embraced it more than any other Detroit statue, perhaps because it's the newest and perhaps because it sports the coolest pose, showing Sanders contorting his body to dodge would-be tacklers.

African Lion Panthera leo In the wild, African lions live in social groups called prides, which consist of multiple females, their young and a few males. The pride at the Detroit Zoo features females Asha and Amirah, who have been part of the Zoo family since 2019, along with Kalu, a male lion who joined the pride in November 2024.

After the giraffe was unveiled in April 2018, the Detroit Zoo contacted the Snares to Wares Initiative requesting a similar sculpture be created for the zoo. Sculpture Inspiration and Creation. At the Detroit Zoo Binti, whose name means quotdaughterquot in Swahili, was born on Sept. 10, 2020. She is the first lion born at the Detroit Zoo since 1980. Her mother, Asha, and aunt, Amirah, born in 2016 at another zoo, joined the Detroit Zoo pride in May 2019. The lions can be seen year-round in their 9,600-square-foot African Grasslands
