When you sort a column, Excel rearranges rows based on the values in that column. But with merged cells, the rules change. Excel sees merged cells as a single entity that spans multiple rows or columns, and this disrupts the natural flow of sorting. Imagine trying to sort a deck of cards where some cards are taped together in pairs or triplets.

Excel has long included the ability to merge adjacent cells into a larger, single cell. Method 1 - Unmerge First to Sort Merged Cells in Excel 1.1 Single Column. Steps Part-1. Select the cells that we need to sort. Sort data with merged cells by unmerging all cells first. You can unmerge all merged cells at first, then go ahead to sort the list. Please do as follows. 1.
