When you sort a column, Excel rearranges rows based on the values in that column. But with merged cells, the rules change. Excel sees merged cells as a single entity that spans multiple rows or columns, and this disrupts the natural flow of sorting. Imagine trying to sort a deck of cards where some cards are taped together in pairs or triplets.
Excel has long included the ability to merge adjacent cells into a larger, single cell. Method 1 - Unmerge First to Sort Merged Cells in Excel 1.1 Single Column. Steps Part-1. Select the cells that we need to sort. Click on the Merge amp Center from the Home tab to select the Unmerge Cells option. Find the blank cells after unmerging, and click the Find amp Select tab to choose the Go To Special feature. In the Go To Special window, check the Blanks option and hit OK.
Now you would select column A do a copy, then paste Values to replace the formulas with the values they produced. Then you could sort the data like any table multiple columns using column A as the Key field. Excel does a stable sort, so rows with identical keys city name will maintain their same relative position.
Select the merged cells, and then in the Ribbon, go to Home gt Alignment gt Merge amp Center gt Unmerge Cells. This leaves the data from each merged cell in the top cell of each unmerged range. Next, copy the data down from the top cell to the ones below.
Step 3 - Click on the Sort amp Filter Option. Select the column on the basis of which you want to sort. Click on the Sort amp Filter option in the Editing section. Step 4 - Select a Criteria Select the required criteria, based on which you want to sort the cells. Step 5 - Now Merge Back the Same Cells. Now merge the same cells.

Sort data with merged cells by unmerging all cells first. You can unmerge all merged cells at first, then go ahead to sort the list. Please do as follows. 1. To sort data containing merged cells in Excel, you will need to use the quotSortquot feature. Before sorting, select the entire table, including the merged cells. Next, go to the quotDataquot tab and click on the quotSortquot button.
