I use four multitools actively since you can bind them to hotkeys for quickswapping. You can leave each tool on different modes so you can set them up for different jobs and just press buttons to swap tools quickly for what you want to do so I leave my first two on Pulse Spitter and Blaze Javelin, my third on Mining Laser or Scatter Blaster and my fourth on Terrain Manipulator.

Honestly it depends on what you want out of the Multi-Tool though. I prefer the supercharged slots to be separate so several things get a small boost, as opposed to one piece of tech getting a massive boost. each specialized on 1 thing. 1 for shooting stuff 1 for mining 1 for scanning And I wonder the best supercharge slot layout for each

The same layout system also applies to your ship bonuses as well. There are several YT videos explaining it in detail, with examples, to show how the bonuses are applied. It's a shit system, and HG just threw it into the game in order to give people reason to max out the slots.
