However, after landing an A-Class capital freighter and playing with it a couple of hours, I started doing the Polestar expedition and got a way smaller but really cool looking freighter.

As far as I have been able to determine, there is no difference in the base buildable part of the freighter, they are all the same. It is all just graphics and what kind of ship you want. I initially had the small star destroyer size, and upgraded to a medium size star destroyer because I liked the colours better, plus that sucker is huge.

I recall the max freighter slot size is 34 and it only gets that high in class S ships. Whether you get that much is a matter of luck. I have a feel only NMS devs really know the mass. 12.
