Oldest Soccer Ball

The world's oldest soccer ball is said to be a grey coloured ball made of cow hide and inflated using a pig's bladder. It is likely to have been created between the years of 1540 and 1570 by Scottish soldiers who served Mary - Queen of Scots - during her reign in the 16 th century.

Soccer ball specifications state that a soccer ball must be spherical with a circumference of 27 to 28 in 68.58 to 71.12 cm and a weight of 13 to 15 oz 0.37 to 0.43 kg. The FA's rules established a worldwide standard for soccer balls, with the ball made of the rubber bladder with hand-stitched leather and laces on the outside.

During an excavation project at Stirling Castle, Scotland, UK in the mid-1970s, a grey, leather ball was discovered behind oak-panelling in a bedroom once used by Mary, Queen of Scots during her reign in the 16th century it has since been declared the world's oldest football.
